Here is a comprehensive list of all the classes for TERM 2 which starts on Monday 9th Jan 2017. Enrolment for these classes will open on 14th November.  Click on the class name you are interested in to view details of the class. Please note that before you can enrol for a Class, you must have Registered and paid a Membership fee (which covers the academic year). If you paid this for Term 1 (that has just finished), then you do not need to do this again, and can log in with the User Name and Password that you created then. Otherwise, you will need to Register and take out Membership using the link below.

ACRYLIC PAINTING CLASS

DRAWING AND PAINTING FOR THE TERRIFIED

CLASS: Drawing and Painting for the Terrified

DESCRIPTION: This class is for beginners and those wanting to refresh their skills. We will look at different ways of drawing what you see and not what you think you see. If you think colour mixing is a mystery then this is for you. To begin with you will be provided with paint, students are advised to bring sketch paper and a pencil!

EXPLORING DRAWING

CLASS: Exploring Drawing

DESCRIPTION: In this fun and stimulating class we will work in many mediums, from graphite, charcoal, chalk and then taking the monotone into colour. We will produce pastel, ink, watercolour and even paint. Be prepared to be pushed out of your comfort zone and into a new one! We will analyse composition, subject, space, size, light, shadow and texture. This class is suitable for the complete beginner right through to professional artists.

FELTING

CLASS: Felting

DESCRIPTION: My felting classes are suitable for beginners and those with some previous felting experience.
We will work on flat wet felted pieces for example; wall hangings, framed pictures, book covers, place mats, scarves – building up to 3d felted pieces, pods, handbags, purses.
We will be embellishing our work with thread, beads, metal and found pieces.
You will have the chance to develop your creative skills with a range of fibres and techniques. You can see some examples of things you can expect to make on the PACC tutors website at www.pacctutors.org.uk

All fibre costs will be met by students. The tutor has requested an additional £20 payable to herself for materials from each student.
Please bring a bath towel, bubble wrap, (bath towel size), rolling pin, netting (bath towel size), up to two bamboo table mats that you can roll up (if you can’t find one don’t worry as I do have some spare), a soap that suit your skin (it can be washing up liquid, liquid soap/bar of soap), rubber gloves if you need them and a plastic jug.

MIXED MEDIA

CLASS: Mixed Media

DESCRIPTION: This class is suitable for complete beginners and the more experienced student. We will look at techniques with which to make collage material using papers of different weights, inks and paint along with textiles and other found materials. The focus will be on the composition and design of mixed media artwork using the landscape, still life and architecture for example as themes for exploration. Simple printmaking techniques will also be taught. The first few weeks of the block of teaching will be structured with suggested activities. The rest of the block will be given over to students’ own projects. A limited amount of materials will be provided initially with a full list of materials required by the students given once the block of teaching has been finalised.

POTTERY CLASS

CLASS: Pottery class

DESCRIPTION: The PACC has a fully equipped pottery workshop with wheels and kilns. You are invited to join us to learn the art of pottery. The class caters for students of all abilities. The class will be a beginners guide to making things from clay. Initially I will teach the basic techniques needed to make all kinds of pottery. Small groups and individual attention. Pinch pot, as the name suggests, by pinching clay with your fingers. Slab pots, by joining slabs of clay together. You will learn how to make coil pots. Throwing pot on the potters wheel. We will also cover clay preparation, slip decoration and glazing. Once you have learnt these basic skills you then have the tools to make anything in clay and can start you own personal project. If you already have experience in clay, then come along and start your own project. The emphasis is on developing ideas and creativity. Or you are welcome to slot into what the rest of the class is doing. The pottery classes are willing to accept students mid-term.

PRINT MAKING CLASS

DESCRIPTION: This class will offer students the opportunity to explore and develop skills in a range of printmaking techniques including lino cutting, intaglio, collograph and monoprinting. Each student will be able to produce a small series of editioned prints using different types of paper and inks. The class will also look at how to use an original drawing/artwork and how to develop as a print series.

SILVER JEWELLERY (Self-Help Group)

CLASS: Silver Jewellery class

DESCRIPTION: This is a self-help group for intermediate level designer-maker silversmiths. Participants should have at least 3 years experience and should be able to carry out all basic techniques, including sawing, piercing, filing, forming, soldering multiple joins and polishing. Members of the group may also have experience of techniques such as stone-setting, etching and enamelling. No equipment is provided, however, you may wish to share your equipment with each other and may also club together to bulk order items.

SPINNING AND WEAVING (Self-Help Group)

DESCRIPTION: This class will see the spinning of any fibres on spindles or wheels, weaving on a range of looms from peglooms to four shaft looms. We will also knit, felt and dye. All ages and abilities are welcome, even the complete beginner.

SPINNING : BEGINNERS

CLASS: Spinning Beginners
TUTOR: Isabella Hodge

DESCRIPTION: This class is aimed at people who have not tried spinning before, or who are just beginning.

The class will start with learning the basics of spinning using a drop spindle and wool fibre to make a yarn suitable for knitting or weaving. Next the class will move on to using a spinning wheel and learn how to set up the wheel, spin on it and ply to make finished yarns. The course will also cover the use of different fibres and fibre preparation techniques using both fleece and commercial fibres, yarn finishing and how to spin a variety of different yarns.

Materials for the course will be provided at a cost of £15 per term (payable to the tutor on the first night) including a drop spindle and all fibres required for classes. Spinning wheels and other necessary equipment will be available for use during classes. You are encouraged to bring your own wheel to class but it must be in good working condition, advice on this is available.

Both fleece and commercial fibres will be used on the course, please advise me in advance of any allergies. We will also be handling unwashed fibre on occasion, please advise me if there is any reason (low immune system, pregnancy) you cannot do this.

SPINNING : INTERMEDIATES

CLASS: Spinning Intermediates

DESCRIPTION:This class is aimed at people who know the basics of using a spinning wheel and who can already spin a single and ply a yarn.

The class will start with reviewing the basics of using a wheel and then move on to the use of different draws and plying techniques for spinning different types of yarn. The course will also cover a wide range of fibre preparation techniques including combing and the use of a drum carder, fibre and colour blending, preparing sheep fleece and the use of different finishing techniques.

SPINNING : FIBRE PREPARATION

CLASS: Spinning Fibre Preparation

TIMES: Tuesday  1pm – 3pm  (5 consecutive weeks starts 10th January)
DESCRIPTION: Class will run for five weeks on a Tuesday afternoon,

Topics covered  : Fleece assessment, sorting and washing, hand and drum carding, combing using hand combs and English combs,  using a blending hackle, blending fibres and colours, making your own tops and roving. No dyeing, you’re on your own with that, sorry!

Fibres used: Fleece of different types,  commercial fibres such as wool, silk, alpaca, fancy fibres etc. Not cotton or flax, sorry.

Experience required: A little experience on wheel or spindle, you don’t have to be an experienced spinner to be able to prepare good fibre. If you’re intending to take or have taken Intermediate Spinning  be aware there’s a fair bit of overlap. Good for a refresher though.

There will be a materials charge of £10. Equipment for use in class will be provided ie combs, drum carders, hackles, hand carders etc. Bring your own wheel or you can hire one from me for a modest charge.

WEAVING – HOW TO DRESS YOUR LOOM

CLASS: Weaving – How to Dress Your Loom

DESCRIPTION: This class is aimed for either beginners of weaving or weavers that aren’t confident to calculate their material and dress their loom. The class runs over 10 weeks but with 8 classes of 2.5 hours. The class is mainly for people with their own 4 shaft table loom, we have a few to let over the run of the class.

You will be setting up a woollen scarf as your first project. To get everybody started, this project will be calculated for you and then we will go through it and I will explain how to do the calculation. The following project you will calculate yourself with my assistance. There are lots of yarns available for the first project to choose from for a cost of £5.

You will learn how to – calculate your material usage; warp up your design; dress your loom – everything from fitting the warp on to the warp beam; read your instructions how to feed the warp through the heddles and reed; tie up the weft beam; weave – learn how to read the weaving diagram; how to make bobbins; how to get nice selvedge; how to finish off your cloth.

You will be given handouts with instructions for calculations of warp and weft and other main points for managing by yourself in the future.

WEAVING – GET STARTED WITH YOUR RIGID HEDDLE LOOM

CLASS: Weaving – Starting With Your Rigid Heddle Loom

DESCRIPTION: This class is aimed for people with some dress making knowledge and who wish to create their fabric as well as their garment, to be able to create something really unique, a one off.

The class will run over 20 hours and 10 weeks but distributed over 8 classes. The student will learn how to set up a rigid heddle loom from warping to weaving; how to finish their fabric before starting the process of sewing the garment together.

The students will be using their own sewing machines and rigid heddle loom. All material for weaving and sewing will be at the students own cost.

WEAVING – BRAIDS AND CORDS, COMPLIMENTARY TECHNIQUES

CLASS: Weaving – Braids and Cords, Complimentary Techniques

TIMES: Tuesday 6:30pm – 9pm (10th & 24th January, 7th & 21st February)
DESCRIPTION: This class is aimed at people who wish to learn how to embellish their work with braids and cords of different kinds to create unusual and unique trims.

The class will use several different techniques. We will learn how to weave with tablets, a heddle, use a lucet, Kumihimo weaving on a disc and make cords. These techniques create braids and cords that can be used on their own, e.g. for a tie or a belt, shoe laces, curtain tie backs, bag handles or as a decoration on clothing, the uses are endless.

The class will be running over 10 hours, every second week, i.e. 4 classes of 2.5 hours.

All materials will be provided at a cost of £5 payable to the tutor. Tools for use in class, e.g. heddle, tablets, lucets etc. will be provided by the tutor.
